Squire’s, Braunton: Fish and chip shop restaurant

“Where do I start…fantastic location and lovely clean premises is a great start. Ordered cod and chips with mushy peas and a glass of chilled white wine. The most fantastic meal and I defy anyone to do better. Golden, crispy chips and lovely white flakey cod coated in a crisp, crunchy, golden batter. Service out of the top drawer and very reasonably priced. You really must make the trip, enjoy the view and eat the very best fish and chips anywhere in the country. The home of great fish and chips has to be the South West and Devon and Cornwall in particular. What more could you ask for…”

Hanbury’s, Babbacombe, Torquay: Chip shop

“The most amazing fish and chips whether you choose to eat in the restaurant (Lloyd Loom chairs) or in the takeaway with its specially commissioned paintings by a local artist called Liz Jones. Many different fish to choose from cooked in groundnut oil at 190 degrees in a crisp batter. The chips are Maris Piper - fluffy on the inside, crisp and golden on the outside. You must try, possibly the finest fish and chips anywhere in the UK. In fact I would go as far as to say there isn’t anywhere that even comes close and I have eaten in more chippies that I should mention in case my wife is listening. Happy frying.”

Frydays, Seaton: Chip Shop

“Quite possibly the best chips ever! Crisp and golden exterior, with a light and fluffy interior, they really are very, very good”.

The Chip Stop, Plymouth: Chip Shop

“Cooked to perfection and served to order. Just the right softness inside and crispiness outside. Salt and vinegar and served with a smile by the loveliest staffff in the country!” Kelvin Baines

The Wheelhouse, Dartmouth: Chip Shop

“Being July they were made with new potatoes (sourced locally). This usually means trading crispness for the delicious, slightly sweet flavour of new potatoes. These chips however had just the right consistency and crispness and the taste was superb. It helped that the batter on the accompanying haddock was just superb.” Norman Davies

Buckfastleigh Chips, Buckfastleigh, Devon: Chip Shop

“Chunky, fluffy, cooked to perfection and only 60p a plate, they use marie piper potatoes. I know cause I  asked. I travel 3 miles from my home to go and eat them. They are that good and the staff make you feel really welcome at all times. My wife prefers her chips elsewhere, but these are my favourites!” - Sidney Frank Elbro

The Chip Stop, Stoke, Plymouth: Chip Shop

“In all my travels around the UK I have yet to find a finer tasting chip than this. Fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside. The fish was  beyond description in a crisp batter coating. Mushy peas, gravy and curry sauce of the finest quality. Service and ambiance make this a place not to miss.” - Kelvin
