“I’m Really Enjoying This” says Matt of The Codfather

The popular Codfather Fish & Chip Shop in Northwich in the North West, is owned and run by the very jolly Matthew Orange. He’s relatively new to the Chips business but has been a chef for many years. Here are his thoughts on potatos, chips and life.

1. Where did the idea for the name come from?
The Shop was already named this when we bought it.

2. What got you into this business?
My Great Grandparents had a fish & chip shop, and I fancied a change and a challange.

3. How long have you been open for business?
7th April 2008

4. When did you fry your first chip?
6th April 2008 (but have been a chef for 20 years)

5. What is the secret of great chips?
Good potatoes and oil.

6. On average, how many portions do you serve in a month?
4,000

7. Would you ever eat anyone else’s chips? And, if so, whose?
Bizzy Plaice Chip shop in Edensfield, Lancashire.

8. What is your favourite potato?
Maris Piper

9. If you weren’t a chippy what would you be doing?
Still chefing

10. What are the best bits about your job?
The Comments I get from customers, it give me great satisfaction.

11. What are the worst bits?
Paying all the utility bills!!

12. Any amusing incidents, involving a member of the public?
Someone tried to say they had, had a piece of chicken from our shop and had made them ill, we asked them to take a look at our menu board they asked us why? I informed them that they must have the wrong shop as we did not sell chicken and never had!!

13. Who is your inspiration – in chips and in life?
In chips it would Gary and Wendy at Bizzy Plaice and in life my wife.

14. What would be your last meal?
Fishfinger butties

15. What is your favourite film?
Dumb and Dumber

16. Describe yourself in three words.
Reliable, honest and laid back.

17. If you were Prime Minister what would you change?
Tax, VAT and fuel costs

18. What are your future ambitions for the business?
To open more chip shops

19. What celebrity would you most like to share a bag of chips with? And why?
Gordon Ramsey, to see if he could cook fish and chips better than me.

Why did the blonde stare at the orange juice. Because it said CONCENTRATE!!
